Matheson advises on all areas of public and administrative law including public procurement, tribunals of inquiry and public inquiries and concerning environmental and planning law.  This includes acting in Judicial Reviews, Statutory Appeals and Cases Stated.  We also advise public bodies on Freedom of Information law (“FOI”), Data Subject Access Requests (“DSARs”), statutory complaints and on governance issues.

Experience Highlights
  • Advising Central Applications Office (Ireland's central university admissions body) in connection with challenges to the process adopted to address Leaving Certificate examination results arising out of Covd-19 lockdown.
  • Sole legal advisor to public bodies including the Adoption Authority of Ireland, advising on all aspects of its governing legislation and representing it in all legal proceedings.
  • Legal advisor to Chartered Accountants Ireland, advising on all aspects of the performance of its regulatory functions, disciplinary tribunals and complaint investigations, and recently advising on the amendment of its Constitution, Charter, codes and bye-laws. 
  • Frequently advise state, semi-state and other public bodies on all aspects of FOI law, from FOI requests to the application of FOI law to complex commercial transactions involving FOI bodies and private companies.  Most notably, our FOI team has advised RTE and the Adoption Authority of Ireland on FOI issues.
  • Represented Three Ireland (Hutchison) Limited as a notice party to judicial review proceedings taken by Vodafone against the Commission for Communications Regulation and represented Sky Ireland in a separate challenge to a decision of the Commission for Communications Regulation.
  • Act for a range of developers as notice parties to judicial reviews challenging decisions of An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission including acting for Indaver, Ecopower, Chartered Land and Tudor Homes.
